Been Around The Block

AND AROUND THE BLOCK INDEED HE?S BEEN.

HE?S NO STRANGER ON THE CLUBBING SCENE!

Hugely popular in the 90s, Block started his career in a London pub in 1985 when funk and soul were big. It was during the acid house period though that the DJing began properly, and when clubbing really took off, so did Brandon . . .  to Ibiza.

It was 1990 when Brandon first went to Ibiza and fell in love with the island. The following summer he packed some bags, a bit of money and stayed there for as long as he could.  Fast forward to 2001 and along with his DJ partner Alex P, the pair had become somewhat part of the scenery.

With a five year Sunday session residency at the Space terrace,  Up Yer Ronson in Leeds, FUBAR at the Milk Bar in London, Club For Life and Malibu Stacey in London, nowadays you will find him playing regularly at the Ministry of Sound, Turnmills, Miss Moneypenny?s, Golden, Republica, Progress, Karanga, Colours, Clockwork Orange and Kelly?s. That?s not to mention his globe-trotting…. he was reported as having been seen in Majorca in ?99 with the crowd going mental – just the way he likes it apparently.  ?It just makes it so good to see the happy faces, enjoying themselves? everyone?s in there, waving their arms in the air. It?s a DJ?s dream?.

As for the music, it?s all about uplifting party house music. His taste is eclectic so be prepared for anything (on both sides of the turntable).

DATE: SATURDAY 7TH MARCH Boogaloo is bringing its second big name to our island this month: Graeme Park – the man who proclaims, ?I haven?t had a weekend to myself in 20 years?. And he?s probably right.

Graeme found himself working in a Nottingham record shop in the early 80s, when the very first house records began to filter through from Detroit and Chicago. He was one of the first to showcase this new style of music, and his reputation soon led him to Mike Pickering at Hacienda Manchester. His house pioneering meant he was one of the first British DJs to play places like Australia and some South American countries, as well as producing and remixing tracks for the dancefloor.

He has just recently celebrated his 20th anniversary in 2004, and he is still going strong. The Hacienda however is now an apartment building and at the back of the building there is a time-line, carved into steel, detailing the history of the club from Madonna?s early performance to its closure. And there?s Graeme?s name not once, but twice – carved into the metal for time immemorial.
