Emma Dorris

Trainee, Carey Olsen Jersey LLP

Age 25

University

Oxford Brookes University, BPP University

Course

History at OBU then a Post-Graduate Diploma in Law at BPP

What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? Either a Meteorologist or a Fairy Princess

Favourite way to relax A sunset BBQ down at St. Ouens or a slow and chatty cliff path walk on the north coast with friends.

Favourite place to eat in Jersey Oyster Box

Favourite possession Photo albums filled with photos from the last few years, I took a lot of the photos on film so would be devastated if they were ruined.

What made you choose to work for Carey Olsen?

Prior to joining Carey Olsen last year I had no legal work experience, therefore I wanted to join a firm that I felt offered the best opportunities for me to learn and develop my career in an encouraging environment. I had heard that Carey Olsen was a great employer as well as being a highly regarded firm and after interviewing for a couple of roles at the firm I felt they were the right fit.

What professional training have you done?

I am currently studying for the SQE2 (Solicitors Qualifying Exams) which I will be taking in May, after passing SQE1 last July. The best training however has come from working in a department that is full of highly experienced (and very patient) individuals who I am continuously learning from.

What do you do on an average day?

I work within the property team and although the work varies hugely depending of the transactions I am dealing with, the majority of my time is spent liaising with other firms and advising clients, as well as drafting and reviewing documentation.

What is your next step?

Qualifying as an English Solicitor, hopefully by the end of this year.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Don’t feel like you need to know what you want to do straight away, and feel free to explore different career paths to decide if it’s the right fit. One thing that’s great about starting a career in law at the moment is that the new Solicitor Qualifying Exams have made it easier to enter the profession regardless of what you have previously studied or your previous experience so you don’t need to have it all figured out as soon as you graduate.
