The team at CCA are no doubt readying glasses and prepping canapés for this evening’s private view of the 2024 Summer Exhibition, the biggest open-call art exhibition in the Channel Islands, running for the rest of the month and through until to the end of July. Now in its 8th year, the Jersey Summer Exhibition continues to be a highlight of the cultural calendar and is a great opportunity for island artists to come together and exhibit.
Each year CCA invites a guest panel of professional artists to join the judging panel for the Jersey Summer Exhibition. These are artists of international acclaim who use their years of experience and knowledge to carefully deliberate the artworks selected for exhibition. Joining the panel at CCA Galleries International for the 2024 Jersey Summer Exhibition are Tom Hammick, Ben Johnson and Sue Timney.
Born in 1963, Tom Hammick currently works between his painting and printmaking studios in South East London. His work is informed by a passion for poetry, music, film, the environment and concerns of love and loss and the human condition around climate change.
Tom Hammick studied Art History at the University of Manchester and later Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Art and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Canada. He has an MA in Printmaking, also from Camberwell, and taught Fine Art Painting and Printmaking at the University of Brighton.
Ben Johnson was born in Llandudno, Wales. He studied at the Royal College of Art and has lived and worked in London since 1965. His first solo exhibition was at the Wickesham Gallery, New York, in 1969 immediately after graduating from the Royal College. He is best known for his paintings based on architectural spaces (some almost forensically accurate, others heavily manipulated) and his large-scale, intricately detailed cityscape paintings, which include panoramas of Hong Kong, Zürich, Jerusalem, Liverpool and, most recently, his view of London which was completed as part of a residency at the National Gallery, London, in 2010. His work is included in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Regional Services Museum, Hong Kong; and the Government Art Collection.
Sue Timney has worked in Britain, Europe and Japan for over 30 years creating interior projects celebrating her own brand of exotic classicism under the Timney-Fowler and Sue_TIMNEY banners. Her work ranges from commercial and residential interior architecture to product design. She was made a Visiting Professor and Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 2007 and also holds the Textile Institute’s Design Medal and was nominated for the Prince Philip Designer’s Prize by the Royal College of Art. From 2012 – 2014 Sue was President of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) and is she is currently a Trustee of the Laura Ashley Foundation. Sue is a consultant and presenter for Television specialising in interior design and textiles. .
